Asphalt Sales Company began introducing asphalt paving materials in the early 1930's. We believe we are the oldest supplier of asphalt paving materials in the Kansas City area and possibly the entire Mid-West. Ralph Frye began experimenting with liquid asphalt in a sauce pan on his kitchen stove. Our company is unique because we are a supplier of materials only. Unlike most of our competitors, we are not in the contracting business. A company photo from 1935 shows our first asphalt plant on Mill Street in Kansas City, Kansas. At that time the company was named "Kansas Asphalt Products Company." From the Mill Street location, the company moved to 18th & Osage, also in K.C.K., and wascalled"FryeAsphalt."
After the big flood in 1951, the company moved again to 14th & Kansas Avenue. An 840 Barber Green continuous mix asphalt plant was erected. State-of-the-Art at the time, the 840 made 35 tons of mix per hour. The company name was changed at the Kansas Avenue location to "Asphalt Sales Company." In 1964 a new H&B one ton batch plant was constructed behind the 840 Barber Green, which was later dismantled and sold to the City of Warrensberg, Missouri. The H&B could produce an astonishing 80 tons per hour, but without silos no mix could be stored ahead. Silos were added to the H&B, allowing us to set a long sought goal of producing over 1000 tons of mix in one day. the H&B plant gave way to a new CMI batch plant for the move to Turner. The H&B ended up with a contractor in Rome, Georgia.
